Editing

I’ve had the opportunity to edit both a team of technical writers as a senior copy editor at studioD and Leaf Co.,  as well as a team of creative writers and editors in my position as Editor in Chief at dguides.com. The longer I edit others’ work, the more respect I have for the writing process and each individual writer. At the same time, the better I get at identifying issues that weaken prose, such as the illogical flow of ideas, overuse of common words, hyperbole, vague or unsubstantiated statements, or a diffused focus.

Just as important is to identify bigger-picture issues and organizational problems. Does the content deliver what it promises? Does it flow logically from beginning to end? Is it properly targeted toward its audience? However great the product or idea, badly written or unfocused prose is either ineffective or worse, a turn-off.
